What was once a small but thriving town along the Yonge Street corridor is
today one of the fastest growing and most desirable communities in Ontario
Richmond Hill is one of 29 municipalities within the Greater Toronto Area
(GTA), an important political and economic region for both Ontario and Canada.
We are strategically located at the centre of the GTA, adjacent to major
transportation networks. Today and into the future, our community is influenced
by issues within the larger GTA, such as rapid growth, growing ethnic diversity
and traffic congestion.
Our community has expanded far beyond its original settlement and our
population enjoys relatively new municipal infrastructure. Historic and natural
landmarks remain and are cherished by our residents, such as the original
Downtown, Mill Pond and the Oak Ridges Moraine.
People from around the world have settled in Richmond Hill in recent years,
making our community a rich mosaic of cultures, languages and faiths.
Together, we celebrate a variety of cultures and traditions, as well as the
Town’s own heritage. We also take pride in our record of community
involvement in recreation, volunteer service and the arts.
Our demographic is generally young, family oriented and well-educated,
with the highest proportion of residents with post-secondary education
anywhere in Canada. Most are homeowners who use a personal vehicle as their
primary means of transportation and commute outside of Richmond Hill to
their workplace. Although generally affluent, our population is nonetheless
experiencing a growing affordability gap that is challenging the Town’s
perception of itself.
Our local economy is expanding, largely driven by small business. At the same
time, many major employers have established corporate headquarters here.
Our businesses represent a diverse range of industries, from professional/
scientific/technical, to manufacturing, to wholesale and retail trade.
